In late July and early August 2024, I embarked on a two-week photographic safari in the heart of Kenya's Masai Mara, during the Great Migration. The safari was hosted by Wild Eye (
https://wild-eye.com), who specialize in photographic wildlife experiences. The Wild Eye Mara Camp is located on the edge of the Mara River in the Mara Triangle Conservancy.
I got to witness herds of wildebeest, zebras, and even a group of topi (a less common sight) take the plunge to cross the Mara River. Vuka - Swahili for "cross"! The "circle of life" is on display as crossing the Mara River is full of danger - from strong currents, massive Nile crocodiles, and other predators (like lions) patrolling the banks on the other side, ready to ambush exhausted animals.
What is not shown in the photos below is the overall experience… the incredible Masai camp staff (including Masai leader Dickson), hearing the sounds of wildlife at night from your canvas tent, hot bucket showers, so many stars at night, the anticipation of what sightings will happen that day… and the Wild Eye guides and other guests - all sharing a passion for wildlife.
